Abstract: This approach aims to analyze the short story Vôvô Bartolomeu (1979), by António
Jacinto in the attempt to show some identity issues that stand out in the narrative in order to
raise aspects that dialogue with the propositions of Julio Cortázar (1993) when he stresses the
importance of choosing the theme of a story, so that this choice transcends something beyond
the story itself. In addition, we will seek to identify how the narrative process has been built
into the story, having as theoretical support the contributions of Walter Benjamin (1994).
Regarding the historical moment, it is worth highlighting that Angola experienced a long period
of colonization imposed by Portugal and which is therefore by its writers that the country can
be represented in a more forceful way than in the facts recorded in official documents, because
narratives and Angolan verses present the cry of those brave intellectuals who fought for
emancipation and freedom. António Jacinto is one of those writers who, through literature,
managed to resist the Portuguese domain.
